In February 2019, Florida rappers YNW Melly (real name: Jamell Demons) and YNW Bortlen (real name: Cortlen Henry) were arrested for the murder of aspiring rapper Anthony “YNW Sakchaser” Williams and Christopher “YNW Juvy” Thomas Jr. Almost two years after Melly’s incarceration, the rapper is being sued for Thomas and Willaims’ estates, TMZ reports.
According to TMZ, Williams ‘and Thomas’ estates have filed illegal death suits against Melly. The alleged damages are reportedly “millions or tens of millions of dollars or more,” according to TMZ court documents. The lawsuit on Anthony Williams’ estate alleges that Melly killed him for money, and that greed was a factor in the alleged murders. Melly’s mother and manager are said to have been named in both suits. The Williams estate allegedly claims Melly’s manager transported Melly from the crime scene.
After Melly and YNW Bortlen were arrested in February 2019, they were both charged with first degree murder. Melly and Bortlen subsequently pleaded not guilty on either point. In April 2019, it was announced that the state of Florida was planning to impose the death penalty on Melly.
Earlier this year, Melly tested positive for COVID-19 while in custody, but was refused release. In May, Bortlen Henry was granted bail release.
