The best shows and movies on Hulu this month

Hell or high water

Available from January 1st
Start 2021 in style with this modern western thriller. Hell or High Water is a grainy heist film with a prime cast: Chris Pine and Ben Foster star as brothers robbing a bank to take care of their family, while Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham play the Texas Rangers on their tail. Director David Mackenzie and writer Taylor Sheridan, who is now a big TV guy thanks to the development of Yellowstone, give their cat-and-mouse game real power and take the story in a surprisingly introspective direction. It’s a mind-boggling frontier drama that has received four Oscar nominations but somehow feels like it’s not being talked about enough.

Love & basketball

Available from January 1st
Love & Basketball was the directorial debut of Gina Prince-Bythewood of The Old Guard, who said her goal in writing the film was “to get a black when Harry met Sally”. She succeeded; It has become a classic at the turn of the millennium. Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps are the perfect team as childhood neighbors and loved ones who are realizing their dreams of becoming professional basketball players. Love & Basketball is not only a dreamy romance, but also a smart sports film about the pressures young athletes are exposed to.

The princess bride

Available from January 1st
Would you like to escape into a fantasy this month? As you wish. As of the New Year, The Princess Bride is finally on Hulu, which makes it even easier to repeat the adventures of Westley (Cary Elwes), Buttercup (Robin Wright), Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), rodents of unusual size, and other colorful characters in this elaborate bedtime story that a grandfather (Peter Falk) tells his grandson (Fred Savage). (If you’re really in the mood to feel something, track it down by watching the late Carl Reiner reenact the ending with his son, the movie’s director, Rob Reiner.)

Derek DelGaudio is in and of itself

Available January 22nd
Derek DelGaudio’s incredible one-man show In & Of Itself comes to Hulu as a film directed by Frank Oz, who also directed stage production. DelGaudio is a magician, among other things, but “Zaubershow” doesn’t come close to summarizing this experience, which combines denominational storytelling and impressive tricks. In the end, it is an ingenious exploration of identity. While the film can’t fully reproduce the feeling of attending the live performance, the fact that it translates so well onto the screen is still an impressive feat.

Available January 29th
If Schitt’s Creek made your sense of humor more Canadian, check out Jann. The Canadian comedy, produced by Schitts Creek EP Andrew Barnsley, is making its US debut on Hulu, which will release the first two seasons later this month. Jann plays the lead role and was co-created by singer-songwriter and actress Jann Arden, who plays a fictional version of herself: a former pop star who deals with a breakup from her long-time friend and her mother’s early-stage dementia while trying to stage a professional comeback. The show is already a hit in Canada, where it has received multiple nominations for the Canadian Screen Award. Sarah McLachlan is also a guest as Jann’s arch-rival.
