The good doctor: Osvaldo Benavides is promoted to series regular after Antonia Thomas’ surprising departure
Dr. Audrey Lim’s new love interest is here to stay.
The Good Doctor promoted Mexican actor Osvaldo Benavides to the regular series ahead of season 5. His character, Dr. Mateo Rendón Osma, was featured in Part 1 of the Finale of the fourth season of the ABC medical drama, which aired on May 31st.
The news of Benavides’ promotion comes shortly after it was confirmed that original cast member Antonia Thomas (Dr. Claire Browne) will be leaving the Freddie Highmore-led series after the episode on Monday.
The Good Doctor’s two-part finale accompanied Shaun and the surgical team to Guatemala to help patients in a rural hospital. Among the local doctors is the aforementioned Osma, who immediately established a connection with the chief doctor of St. Bonaventure.
In addition to Benavides, Noah Galvin (Asher Cloud) and Bria Samoné Henderson (Jordan Allen) were promoted to the regular series for season 5.
The Good Doctor has survived several waves of line-up changes over the years. Chuku Modu and Beau Garrett left the show at the end of Season 1, followed by Tamlyn Tomita at the end of Season 2. Recurring guest star Jasika Nicole was promoted to regular series prior to season 3, but retired original cast member Nicholas Gonzalez prior to season 4.
Benavides is best known for his role as Andrés Carranza Dávila in the Netflix original Monarca. He currently plays as Rafael Contreras in Telemundo’s La suerte de Loli. Deadline was the first to report his promotion.
