Christmas Chronicle 3 is not out of the realm of possibility with Chris Columbus open to a third film. The Christmas Chronicles, a Netflix original, was co-produced by Columbus and directed by Clay Kaytis. The vacation movie with Kurt Russell as Santa Claus and the introduction of Goldie Hawn as Mrs. Claus was a hit with the audience. The streamer reported that over 20 million households saw the film in the first week after its release in 2018. It didn’t take long for a sequel to go into production.
To the The Christmas Chronicles 2Columbus sat in the director’s chair with a script by Columbus and Matt Lieberman. As with the original, millions of viewers immediately checked the release when it hit Netflix late last month. This makes the continuation of the streaming service’s most watched title on its debut weekend. This has left some fans hoping that another follow-up movie starring Russell and Hawn will be made for yet another vacation adventure like Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and it seems like Columbus is just as open to the idea.
Columbus spoke to ComicBook.com about The Christmas Chronicles 2 and said the following.
“There is a poignant moment in the film when they watch the children make snow angels and Mrs. Claus says, ‘It’s so nice to have real children in the village again.’ But you say, “We never explain why she feels this way. There’s some kind of hidden, slightly dark, melancholy thing in her past that we don’t know about. “And I love the fact that we don’t deal with that in this movie. It’s in some of the notes Kurt wrote. We know what it is. Maybe if we’re lucky enough to do a third it may be related. ”
While there haven’t been any official discussions between Columbus and Netflix over the possibility of The Christmas Chronicles 3, the director also says the team behind the franchise would be open to expanding the story, even if they don’t know exactly which direction still to go with the act.
“I don’t know. But it’s interesting because right now I can’t even think about what the third potential film could be. But we’re definitely ready to open up this world even more.”
If another sequel never happens, The Christmas Chronicles 2 could serve as Russell’s final film. In another interview with Yahoo Entertainment recently, Columbus said that Russell wanted Santa Claus to be the “last role” he would play before going into the sunset. The actor is reportedly so committed to the role that he also wrote nearly 200 pages of backstory for his version of Santa, although most of the information wasn’t in the films. Turning the series into a trilogy could be a great way to give Russell another memorable accomplishment.
Time will tell if there will ever be a third installment in the Christmas Chronicles franchise, but for now you can find both films currently streamed on Netflix. This message comes to us from ComicBook.com.
