An amphitheater in North Augusta, South Carolina is being renamed to honor the late soul legend Sharon Jones, as The North Augusta Star and Rolling Stone highlight. On Monday evening (November 2nd), North Augusta City Council passed a resolution to rename the 600-seat North Augusta Amphitheater the Sharon Jones Amphitheater. According to RS, Monday’s council hearing resulted in a 6-0 vote in favor of the name change.
Jones spent much of her life in New York, but lived in North Augusta with her family for the early years of her childhood. The singer also lived in the city towards the end of her life. Jones died in November 2016 at the age of 60. She died after an ongoing battle with pancreatic cancer.
