Universal Home Entertainment just released a trailer for the upcoming dramedy Our friendWith Jason Segel and Dakota Johnsonand ok i guess Casey Affleck is here as well. The film about a man who moves in with his best friend and her husband to take care of the house after she was diagnosed with terminal cancer is set to hit theaters and on PVOD on January 22, 2021.

Based on the Esquire article “The Friend: Love Is Not A Big Word” by Matt TeagueThe film stars Affleck as Teague and Johnson as his wife Nicole. The weight of Nicole’s tragic diagnosis weighs heavily on the couple, who struggle to raise two young daughters in the face of impending death. The couple’s mutual friend, Dane (Segel), offers to move in and ease the load by helping the children prepare meals and generally doing everything possible to make Matt and Nicole’s impossible load a little easier to carry. Dane’s stay is supposed to be temporary at first, but in the end he throws aside all his other relationships and responsibilities to be there for his friends until the inevitable end.

The film from the director Gabriela CowperthwaiteRoadside Attractions and Gravitas Ventures took over the distribution rights in January this year and are clearly viewing an award season release in an extremely uncertain year for films. Judging by the trailer, Our Friend is a real contender that promises to be some excruciatingly heartbreaking (and ultimately heartwarming) performances from the leading cast.
