The NCIS: Los Angeles episode this Sunday has largely closed the “Superbills” fake case, but has saved its greatest moments in retrospect – and there were several – for the last few minutes.
Let’s start with the brighter side of things: while Deeks was hiding a possibly broken rib, he called Kensi to inform him of his fare, which he had “washed out” at FLETC. But when he got back to headquarters, Hetty (who said Kilbride was on an operation that “hit a hook”) came in to invite him to open the top drawer of his old desk. No wonder his NCIS badge was inside. And although they’ll be holding a team-wide celebration until Callen gets back, Kensi says the night is free for her to celebrate herself – once Deeks admitted his injury, whoops.
So where was Callen? As mentioned in the episode above, he intended to propose long-term love to Anna. And he wanted to do that by surprising her at the motel she was staying in while he was participating in the U.S. Rebuild project to help a community devastated by the double strike of forest fires and COVID. But when Callen shows up at reception and asks which room Anna is in, the manager says that the motel is actually completely empty. But what about all the volunteers who were there on the Rebuild US project?
What kind of rebuilding project? The confused manager asked, making it clear that Anna had told her boyfriend quite a whopper.
Anyway … when he spoke of Callen, he flashed back to his younger self twice in advance of his possible suggestion (played by Johnny Jay Lee). In the first flashback we saw Young Callen, who was in love with a young woman named Jocelyn – and she, him. But in the second flashback, to the heartbreaking moment when Callen left Jocelyn and that normal life behind for answers about his identity / past, he jumped into the back seat of a car where a younger Hetty questioned his final decision . It was clearly Linda Hunt’s voice, but Hetty herself when seen was some combination of another actress and / or CGI and / or practical prosthetic / wig.
But wait, there’s more! Because in addition to Deeks’ very good news and the blow Callen had suffered, there was a small business with Sam’s daughter Kamran – who after a quick phone call with her father was sneaked into a parking garage, packed and dragged away by a masked man.
What do you think of NCIS: LA’s many twists and turns this week?
