While his brother, played by Chris Hemsworth, might be the namesake of the film, Loki made his directorial debut Kenneth Branaugh‘s 2011 film as a sleazy and cunning manipulator plagued with secrets. True to his original comic roots, he was born a frost giant and taken in by Odin (Anthony Hopkins). However, a key difference between his initial comic run and the MCU is that his father Laufey (Colm Feore), left him. This revelation pushes Loki to take over Asgard while the King is in his Odinsleep and Thor is banished to Earth.

The Avengers

Thor would have established Loki as a worthy opponent of his brother, but The Avengers made him an iconic comic book villain. Still driven by his desire to find the Tesseract, Loki carries out a full-scale invasion of Earth thanks to his newly formed alliance with the Chitauri. The plan begins when he attacks a SHIELD base and kills Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) under his control – and ends with a sweeping attack on New York City, accidentally creating The Avengers and their bond. We can see Loki arrested and sent back to Asgard, but we’ll get back to that in a moment.

Thor: The dark world

Let’s be honest here; There is a chance that you will not remember what is happening in Thor: The dark world. Even though Loki was quite a forgetful movie in the MCU, it still managed to be a fun and welcome presence. Locked in captivity after the events of The Avengers, he is freed to search for Thor after her mother Frigga (René Russo), is killed by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston). The two brothers need each other as they defeat the Dark Elves before he finds the mysterious ether in the body of Jane Foster (Natalie Portman).

THOR: Ragnarok

Loki later returned in THOR: Ragnarokwhere he was given his most important bow to date. Despite the development in The Dark World, Ragnarok shows Loki as a true antihero in the MCU. Thor and Loki find Odin on his deathbed and meet their long-lost sister Hela (Cate Blanchett) included. When their sister of the goddess of death defeats them both, the brothers end up on Sakaar, where Thor is subjected to gladiatorial fights and mocked while Loki rubs against the Grand Master (Jeff Goldblum).

Avengers: Infinity War

Loki is not an integral part of Avengers: Infinity War, but its looks certainly gave the film an emotional introduction. While Infinity War kicks off right after Ragnarok, it’s nowhere near as lucky. Thor and Loki’s ship was taken by Thanos (Josh Brolin). Loki tries to outsmart the mad titan by pledging his allegiance, but Thanos catches the ruse and crushes the trickster’s neck. Hardly anyone knew that this was just the beginning of Infinity War’s high death toll.

Avengers: Endgame

Do you remember when I said we were going back to the end of The Avengers? We last saw Loki in a crucial sequence in Avengers: Endgame With that, the Avengers returned to important events in the history of the franchise. That includes their first battle in New York with a very different ending. When the team’s plan fails, a new timeline is formed as Loki frees himself from his constraints and steals the tesseract.

That fateful escape has led to Loki’s first solo outing, the self-titled Disney + show, which will air on June 9th. Hiddleston will return on the side Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku, Sasha Lane, and Richard E. Grant. All of the films listed above can be streamed on the platform, with Loki broadcasting new episodes every Wednesday.
