Apple TV + has a course planned for The Mosquito Coast: the adaptation, directed by Justin Theroux, will debut Friday April 30th, the streamer announced on Friday on the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. It will premiere in two episodes, with new episodes following every Friday.
Based on the novel by Paul Theroux (yes, this is Justin’s uncle), The Mosquito Coast follows idealistic inventor Allie Fox as he uproots his family and takes them to Mexico while they flee the US government. Theroux plays Allie, with Luther creator Neil Cross co-writing the first episode and acting as the showrunner. The book was previously adapted as a 1986 film with Harrison Ford.
Apple also released an initial trailer for the seven-episode series, in which Allie and his family were on the run through the Mexican countryside. “Dad, why are you doing this to us?” Asks Allie’s daughter when we see the family hiding from patrol cars and helicopters. Allie’s answer: “Because we have a problem.” When Allie’s wife, played by Grey’s Anatomy veteran Melissa George, panics, Allie assures her that her children “won’t get hurt. You are with us. “But his wife shoots back:” I’m worried about that. “
