The two-part premiere of the Good Doctor ended after a second hour on Monday evening as the doctors at St. Bonaventure brought the COVID-19 pandemic to a manageable level. The second episode also allowed fans to spend a little more time with Dr. Melendez (Nicholas Gonzalez) when Claire (Antonia Thomas) envisioned that her former mentor and near-boyfriend would help her track down an Army veteran whose dog tags were found in the commercial center of personal effects that the hospital in the Pandemic had acquired. Claire’s trip during the premiere explored the overwhelming grief and loss the COVID pandemic has caused the world amidst chaos and fear.
After Melendez, who died in the season three finale, returned, The Good Doctor was able to show, if only in Claire’s head, how Claire’s own journey of grief corresponds to that of their patients and their families. For the fans it was also confirmed that Melendez may be “gone”, but will definitely not be forgotten in the heart of the show.
“It was nice to see [Nicholas] and it’s good to have him back, “series star and executive producer Freddie Highmore told TV Guide.” By the end of season three, we all hope this won’t be the last time we’ll see Dr. Have seen Melendez. Of course I wanted more of this story. And I feel like more people did. This is a wonderful way to bring him back that matches the emotional – the way of character development and understanding in deeper ways what Claire is going through through her loss. ”
Claire wasn’t the only one who had a strong relationship with Melendez, and some members of the team didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to him as they dealt with the aftermath of the earthquake at the end of season three. So are there more people who could use a spiritual visit from Melendez in season 4?

“You never know,” Highmore teased. “At least these first two episodes show that there is a certain possibility [for him] to stay a part of the show in a way, so absolutely. As we would have said at the end of season three, I think that’s still the case today … hopefully he’ll continue to be a part of [the show] in whatever way possible. ”
For now, the doctors and residents of St. Bonaventure will try to move on. While they can’t completely ignore COVID, it won’t be the central focus in the season, and the next big obstacle will be the residents who hire the interns and show them the ropes. Get ready for Shaun, the mentor.
“That will surely be the big challenge for him this season – learning to be responsible and take responsibility for other people,” said Highmore. “We saw how he grew and learned as a surgeon and did his job better than any other resident. But being responsible for others now and teaching other people the things they do is a whole different challenge. ” He himself learned. I think we are all well aware of the fact that Shaun would be very good at you, he has an amazing level of medical insight and I think he will be a wonderful teacher that way. Perhaps where it is will struggle, the more you know, personal pastoral care that it must give to these young recruits. That will be interesting for sure. It’s really exciting to bring new people to the show with a fresh sense of energy. and they are all wonderful people. And the characters are really interesting too, so I’m looking forward to everyone getting to know them. ”
Good luck to the newbies and Shaun as we know this will be a ride.
The Good Doctor is broadcast on ABC at 10 / 9c on Mondays.
