four albums out this week that you must try now

With so much good music released all the time, it can be difficult to determine what to listen to first. Every week Pitchfork offers a number of important new releases for streaming services. This week’s stack features new albums from Paul McCartney, Mica Levi, Walt Disney Records, and Sheff G. Paul McCartney:: McCartney III [Capitol]

McCartney III arrives 50 years after McCartney and 40 years after McCartney II. Paul McCartney recorded the long-belated third episode of the trilogy earlier this year when he was locked in his home in Sussex, England. “I only did things that I would have liked to do,” he said. “I had no idea this was going to end up as an album.” McCartney’s previous album was Egypt Station in 2018.

Mica Levi:: Ruff [self-released]

Ruff Dog is the first non-soundtrack album Mica Levi released under her own name. Released as a surprise, the 11-song Lo-Fi collection contains a title that begins with “A Jimi Hendrix in civilian clothes…” and is 107 words long. (The song itself is just over a minute long.) The album follows her scores for films like Monos, Jackie, and Under the Skin.

V / A: Soul (Original Soundtrack) [Walt Disney]

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross shot the new Disney Pixar movie Soul. The film, in which Jamie Foxx plays the leading role and contains original songs by Jon Batiste, is about a musician whose soul is separated from his body. The soul soundtrack also features Daveed Diggs’ “Rappin Ced” and Cody ChesnuTT’s “Parting Ways”.
