Chicago Med Bosses Collapse Natalie and Crockett’s Surprising “Tender” Second: “It is Getting Deep”

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Wednesday Chicago Med. Proceed at your own risk!

It might not have been a kiss on the lips, but Natalie and Crockett at Chicago Med took a small but significant step in their relationship on Wednesday’s episode. At the end of the lesson in which Crockett was treating a former friend who was now getting married, Natalie joined her colleague on the hospital roof.

“Tell me something: why are you doing this … the one-night stands?” Natalie asked. When he didn’t answer right away, she noticed that they all ended up with him alone. When Crockett was silent, Natalie added, “Or maybe that’s the point.” Then she put a comforting hand on Crockett’s shoulder, followed by a gentle, meaningful kiss on his back before walking away.

Below, executive producers Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider talk about the non-sexual moment of intimacy and how the documents will respond to it.

TVLINE | What does this last moment mean for Natalie and Crockett? What motivated Natalie to do something so intimate?
DIANE FROLOV | Well, a couple of things: Her realization of how lonely the man is, and a bit of that realization came from the other story when she was talking to the telemedicine woman. So she absorbs that longing and she sees that in Crockett and that is how he keeps people away from him. Her gesture is, “I really care about you.”
ANDREW SCHNEIDER | And she’s the only person in the emergency room who knows he’s lost a child. So she knows this guy isn’t just that simple, airy Cajun. It has a very deep side and there is a lot of pain.

TVLINE | I found the kiss on his back so subtle but intimate. Was there a debate about what exactly should Natalie be doing right now? How far should it go?
FROLOV | Yes. [Laughs]
CUTTER | We wanted it to be intimate but not sexual. And we thought it was done very well. It’s tender.

TVLINE | How do you process this moment forward? Where are they in the following episode?
FROLOV | They’ll be a little awkward with each other at first because there was this intimacy between them and they’re not really sure what it means. I would say the next episode really examines this and then comes to the realization of what it means.
CUTTER | It gets deep.

TVLINE | How could Will react to Natalie’s going on with Crockett? Will we see that
CUTTER | He’s trying to be an adult. He tries, but he can never fully overcome this relationship. It was a very strong, deep relationship and although he was the one who last turned down Natalie, those feelings never go away.

TVLINE | We’re going to meet Crockett’s ex-wife. What kind of insight will that give us in Crockett?
CUTTER | What it will really do is shed light on Crockett’s past, what drives him, even his childhood … This really is for Natalie. It’ll be a story for Natalie who this guy is and what he’s been through in his life.
