Al Roker has surgery to remove his prostate.
On Friday, November 6th, Today’s beloved weatherman announced that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer after a routine September exam. “It’s good news – bad news,” he said. “The good news is that we figured it out early on. Bad news is that it’s a little aggressive, so I’ll take time out to deal with it.”
“It’s one of those things that happens a little more often than people think,” the 66-year-old continued. “I just decided I wanted to go public with this because one in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their life. However, that number is one in seven and more deadly for African-American men.”
He also noted that if recognized early this is “a truly treatable disease”.
Reflecting on the moment he was diagnosed, Roker, who started his career today in the 90s, said, “When he first started he closed his door and said, ‘I want to always have these discussions face to face . ‘ And I said, ‘Uh-oh. Well, that doesn’t sound good.’ “
