ABC’s mid-season schedule: The Rookie Again on Sunday, black on the transfer

Ten days after unveiling the unwritten premiere dates for 2021, ABC closes the planning puzzle for the midseason with the release of its scripted schedule.

Season 3 of The Rookie will bow at 10 / 9c on Sunday January 3rd, reclaiming its season 2 slot. According to ABC’s teaser, Nathan Fillions Nolan is “near the end of his education” and faces “his greatest challenge as a cop, coming to terms with the decisions he made to pursue the truth”.

Meanwhile, current inmate Black-Ish will be switched back to Tuesday starting Jan. 26 at 9 / 8c, where he will be paired with mixed sister series.

black-ish is moving to make way for the debut of the new multi-cam sitcom Call Your Mother, starring Kyra Sedgwick, which will take over Post-Conners Square on Wednesday from January 13th.

Also of note: ABC’s Thursday cast of Station 19, Grey’s Anatomy and Million Little Things kicks off the second half of their respective seasons on March 4th. The trio will finish their fall runs on December 17th.

For Grey’s, the long hiatus combined with the late start suggests that the number of episodes in season 17 of ABC’s top drama will be well below the standard 25. An ABC insider claims that due to the uncertainty of COVID-19, no firm decision has been made regarding the sequence of consequences. “We are making the maximum number of episodes that can be delivered in a reasonable time given the start date and production restrictions due to COVID,” the source said.
